Contractor Hired for Pothole Project Date: 7/30/2010
| | Today we received a very reasonable bid, from a local contractor, to fill the potholes on the entrance road and to create the new parking area. We have hired Mr. Matt Powell for the job.
We do NOT need a member turnout to help with the work.
I appreciate all of you that have given advice, ideas and offered your help.
Additional information has been mailed to the members.
Thanks again to everyone, see you at the field,
Ralph Knight

Pothole Workday on Standby Date: 7/28/2010
| | Considering the record setting heat and humidity, and the many donations that have been submitted or promised, we are seriously considering hiring out the project. So far, we have actually received $165 in contributions and have more promised. If anyone else would like to donate to the project, please let us know. An email has been sent to the membership with further details on the project.
However, if the estimates are too high and we end up doing the work ourselves, I think common sense dictates that we wait until the weather cools off. Please stand by for now. I will keep everyone posted as things progress.
Thanks,
Ralph Knight

Dirt Party Finalized – July. 31st, Weather Permitting Date: 7/20/2010
| | I want to bring everyone up to date on the pothole eradication party.
The first problem we had was that we were advised that we did not have enough dirt to fill the potholes AND properly fill the depression in the new parking area. This has been resolved and we now have access to all the dirt that Stone Mountain has brought over to the field (the dirt by the fence). We now have more dirt than we will ever need.
In addition, we ordered a truckload of ‘Crush & Run’ to place as a topcoat on the new parking area. This has much better drainage, does not get ‘muddy’ and will match the existing parking. This has been delivered, so now we have all materials on site and ready for use.
The last problem was how to move all this dirt and gravel. The load of ‘Crush & Run’ alone weights 17.2 tons. It was decided to rent heavy equipment in the form of a Bobcat with a front end scoop. We have not been able to locate a large truck to tow the Bobcat ourselves, so we will have it delivered to our site. The ‘delivery and pick-up’ also means we are forced to rent it for a full day, rather than half a day. Since the dirt down by the fence will eat up extra time running back and forth, we are probably going to exceed 4hrs anyway. There is only $50 difference between a half day and a full day rental.
Several members have volunteered to help with the cost of the project. If all the pledges come in, the cost to the club will be less than half the total expenditure.
Weather permitting, our work day will be Saturday, July 31st. We will have the Bobcat delivered at 8:00am and it will be picked up about 3:30 pm. The Bobcat will do all the heavy lifting, but we will still need workers to cut and rake some of the heavier brush in the new parking area and to tidy up the other work with rakes, shovels and brooms.
Anyone that can come out anytime between 8:00 am and 3:30 pm and help on the 31st would be much appreciated. Bring whatever tools you have (gloves, rakes, shovels, weed -eaters, brooms, shears, drinking water, etc).
We will be watching the weather closely as we approach the work day. If the forecast turns bad for Saturday, we can push the workday back another week. Stay tuned, I will keep everyone informed.
Thanks,
Ralph Knight

New Starting Tables Date: 7/2/2010
| | Friday July 2, 2010
Today two new starting tables were placed at the field. One has wheels and the other has to be picked up to be moved. The tables were built by Ken Lightner, Tim Nunes and myself. Ken has been the main motivator behind this project. He obtained the plans, purchased the wood and other supplies, designated a work day and let us use his house and tools for the build. Thank you Ken.
Some supplies, such as wheels (George Royal) and screws (Tim Nunes.) were donated. Others gave cash donations – ( Thank You to Dewey Earnest, Charles Sully and Yours Truly). A few more donations and the tables will be little or possibly no cost to the club treasury.
Tim will be putting some pictures on the web site shortly.
Other stuff: The gate code was changed on Wednesday evening, June 30th. Every effort was made to notify all our current members. Never-the-less I received a phone call first thing Thursday morning (8:00 am) with someone unable to unlock the gate. It was the ‘King Kan’ folks wanting to service our porta-potty. Ooops….. we had forgotten all about them. Anyway, they now have the new code and the porta-potty has been serviced.
I am still waiting on Stone Mountain for some dirt. I will try to contact them after the holiday weekend and see where things stand.
That’s it for now. Let us know how you like the starting tables and please say “Thanks” to all those who helped out with this project. Have a good 4th of July.
See you at the field,
R.K

SMRCF Safety Bulletin : Watch the heat! Date: 6/13/2010
| | Fellow members:
Summer is quickly approaching, and a topic just as important as field safety is personal safety. Temperatures are rapidly approaching 90 degrees now. The field is in the open and we should all be very mindful of the temperature. Please use sunblock on your skin to protect it, and please bring plenty of water or other forms of hydration with you to the field when you fly. Even if you are not thirsty, force yourself to drink occasionally and stay as hydrated as possible. Everyone should also keep an eye out for each other and make sure everyone is in good condition under the intense heat. Take breaks in your car with the A/C on if you need to. Hats are a good idea too.
Please do not underestimate the heat. You can rapidly find yourself in a lot of trouble if you are not careful, and the field has little in the form of care, especially if you are alone. Have fun flying, but take care of yourselves first and foremost.
